Last week former President of the U.S., Bill Clinton, took apart in the inauguration of the first and largest wind farm in Central America. Clinton’s foundation was involved into the project.
The farm is located on the area of 19,000 hectares in the central province of Cocle. The construction began in 2012 by the Spanish company Unión Eólica Panama (UEP).
It has required a total investment of 564 million, of which $ 427 million has been provided by the international corporation Interenergy.
The wind farm is located about 150 kilometers west of Panama City in one of the driest areas of the county. It contains 106 turbines which generating capacity is about 170 megawatts. This is about 6 to 7% of Panama’s needs in electricity presently. Since December 2012 there were 22 turbines functioning in the park generating 55 megawatts. That covers the consumption need of 20,000 households.
The former US president visit was organized to draw higher attention to the ecologic problems and rising needs of usage renewable energy sources.
