It is expected that Metro System will soon become a universal solution for public transportation in Panama City. The tender for the construction of the second line will be awarded very soon if everything goes according to the plan. The new line will be approximately 30 miles long and connect eastern part of the city with the area of San Miguelito. However, there are significant doubts and many protesters criticize Metro for outrageous costs and there are opinions that its necessity is overestimated.
Initially, the construction of the metro in Panama began on the initiative of the former President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli in 2009, and, fortunately, it became a success. The first line was completed. And now the first 13 km (9 miles) of it was put into operation in April 2014. The project of the first line came into cost of $ 2 billion, which was widely criticized, but nevertheless Panama City received its first metro system.
And now, the Administration of Metro announced the tender for the second line will go according to what is planned and the results are to be announced late July. The works on the Second Line will begin in September of 2014.
