With an investment of $72.5 million balboas Saturday April 8th the Amador Causeway was opened to the public during the official ceremony with Juan Carlos Varela, the President of Panama.
“As any other each project that we inherited, the Amador Causeway went through a major review and the result is a much better project from nearly any point of view”, said the President.
“There’re significant improvements: the extension to 4 lanes of the Calzada, Amador, a new cycle path, the renovation of the existing pedestrian, improvements to street lights, landscape, sidewalks, fishing pier and the causeway," continued the President.
The Amador Causeway originally was a narrow land-bridge, built with rocks and ground excavated during the construction of the Panama Canal. It connects the continent with three islands next to the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal and truly is one of the gems of Panama City with magnificent views to the sunset and passing vessels on their way to Canal.
It has been a popular place for tourists and residents, who go there to exercise, eat out, go to a concert, visit Biomuseum and the Punta Culebra Nature Center. This is also the place to take a boat or Ferry to Taboga island, another popular destination for one-day trip in Panama City.
Currently, the Government with the support of the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), promotes the tourism and commercial development of the Amador Causeway with the construction of the Amador Convention Center. It will have capacity for 20,000 people and should replace current venue for many fair in Atlapa. In collaboration with the Panama Maritime Authority there’re works on the tender of a new Cruise Port of Panama City to supply the international demand.
