First Metro Line in Central America Opened in Panama

April 5, President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli inaugurated the first metro line in Panama. The line is not only first in the Republic of Panama, but also throughout Central America and the Caribbean.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Los Andes station. It included a concert with traditional dances and songs and later the President gave a speech.

The price of the ride has not been announced by the officials. Many think that they haven’t done due to the upcoming elections.

The Line One consists of 14 stations, some of which are built underground, and other above. Estimated price of this line is $1.8 billion. The maintenance is expected to cost city budget additional $25 million per year, thus it is fair to predict the price per ride will be somewhere between 50 cents and $1.
