Through Sunday, June 2 the Corpus Christi Festival at Villa de Los Santos makes a trip out to the Azuero Peninsula worth the four hour drive. With its religious roots, this unique festival features dances, interpreted by local townsmen since colonial times. Each dance tells a different tale, and the most notable is “Los Diablos Sucios”, with the colorful, toothy devil masks that have become a national symbol of folklore culture.
Every day a different presentation is made at the center of town. These include Las Enanas (The Dwarf Girls) where men dress in hats down to their torso to look like little people in big hats.
Other dances include Zaracundé, an African slave dance. El Torito Guapo (handsome bull) is from Spain. The most famous dance is a religious one. Los Diablos Sucios (dirty devils). It represents a battle between devils and an angel over a mortal soul.
