The government of Panama has established its position towards the information technologies and continues to implement its information-oriented strategy. Part of the plan became implementation of e-government, free internet access nationwide and easy access to computers in schools.
So what we can see now as a result is that Panama takes leading positions in Latin America in the adoption of information technologies and communication. Also, it is first in Central America, and third in the region according to the 2013 Global Report on Information Technology published by the World Economic Forum.
Until now the country has invested close to $150 million in different programs. The state modernization cost is significantly bigger – the spent budget for the last 3 years exceeds a billion dollars.
According to the General Administrator of National Authority for Government Innovation, there are plans to increase funding the programs in IT area from 0.4% GDP to 0.7%.
