The President of Panama Ricardo Martinelli recently announced the launch the first line of metro to become reality coming March 5. Most recent trial run included press, radio and television, students from University of Panama, and last but not least, construction workers of metro. The President announced dates of the trial period and beginning of operations.
Roberty Roy, the administrator of Metro Panama said that for the trial period metro is going to be free for all passengers. However, the service may have limitations in number of passengers and operation hours. It is expected that in the beginning of May the metro will be begin its commercial operations.
At present day the works are completed at approximately 95%. There are 13 stations with a total length of 13.7 km. The priority for the whole system will be providing excellent level of security. There will be two police officers in each carriage at all times. The main police station will be at Betania station.
Finally, the President added that the there are plans to continue construction of metro in future. The second line will go from east to west of the city and connect 24 de Diciembre district with Tocumen.
