One of the major changes that will happen in Panama along with expansion of the Canal is a new mega-port in Colon. This port will be purposed to serve Super-Post-Panamax vessels.
The land near Colon was sold to SMC Barcelona, a Spanish company which handles the development, management and operation of the port for container handling and related services. Total investment amount to almost $8 billion.
The project includes a multi-modal port with industrial, fishing and tourism areas, terminals for solid and liquid bulk cargo and fuel, the logistics area, office buildings, tourist and commercial center, a power plant, eco-park, communication and infrastructure on almost 432 acres of marine water area and 91 acres of land.
